Easy Process to Create a First Line
Indent in MS Word Document


Some MS Word users demarcate the start of a new paragraph by indenting the first line of that paragraph. For indenting the first line of any paragraph, one can use the Paragraph dialog box for setting an amount by which one needs to indent that line. In the 'Special Field' of the Paragraph dialog box, the user tells the Word program about the need to indent the first line by choosing 'First Line' from the menu options. In the 'By' field, one can tell the amount (in inches) by which, the indent is needed.

Steps to Create a First Line Indent

  • Firstly, place the cursor anywhere within the first paragraph
  • Now, choose the 'Home' tab
  • In the 'Paragraphs' group, click the launcher
  • The Paragraph dialog box will show up
  • Now, choose the 'Indents and Spacing' tab
  • After that, click to open the drop-down menu on the Special field
  • Then, click 'First Line'
  • Enter an amount (in inches) in the 'By' field
  • Then, click OK
  • The first line of the paragraph will be indented

For Removing First Line Indent

  • First of all, place the cursor anywhere in the paragraph
  • Then, choose the 'Home' tab
  • In the 'Paragraphs' group, click the launcher
  • The Paragraph dialog box will be opened
  • Now, choose the 'Indents and Spacing' tab
  • One needs to click the down arrow next to the Special field
  • Then, click 'None'
  • Finally, click OK
